Setting up a wireless virtualisation host with Debian Squeeze and KVM
Submitted by johanv on vr, 03/02/2012 - 11:05
At the moment, I have two 'servers' on my attic. A file server, which is an old laptop running Freenas 8, and a server for printing, scanning and backups, which is a 10 year old PC running Ubuntu Server 10.04.
Since I don't have ethernet cables to the attic, the print server is accessable via wifi. I connected the print server to the file server with a cable, and to access the file server, I just route the traffic through the print server.
Now I want to replace those two servers on the attic by one virtualization host, which will at first just run a virtual copy of the servers I have right now.
Packages I install on my Arch Linux system
Submitted by johanv on do, 06/10/2011 - 19:09
Last weekend, I installed Arch Linux for the second time (I messed up my first installation). After the installation process, I found myself in a command line system (as expected), so I had to install a lot of applications by hand.

Tax-on-Web, Fedora 15 en Firefox 4
Submitted by johanv on za, 25/06/2011 - 20:04

Arch Linux with encrypted LVM on 2 physical volumes
Submitted by johanv on vr, 10/06/2011 - 14:28
In this howto, I explain how I installed Arch Linux, with an encrypted LVM setup. The tricky part is that I have 2 physical volumes for my volume group, which required some hacking to get it working.
Dell Precision M4500, fedora, nvidia and dual screen
Submitted by johanv on ma, 16/05/2011 - 18:06I was experiencing some problems with my dual screen setup on my Dell Precision M4500 notebook with Fedora 15. Now that I finally have it up and running, I thought I might share my configuration as well.
When using the 'free as in freedom' nouveau driver, I experienced a lot of system hangs. I guess this is due to Fedora bug 618143. So I installed the freedom hating NVidia driver as follows:
su -c "yum install akmod-nvidia xorg-x11-drv-nvidia"

Alweer een wild idee, waarvan waarschijnlijk niets komt, maar toch de moeite waard om te lanceren...
Ik denk niet dat ik de enige ben met dit probleem: te veel interessante projecten.

Fedora/NVidia font problem
Submitted by johanv on di, 01/03/2011 - 16:14A quick fedora/nvidia tip:
After installing the evil and freedom hating nvidia-drivers on my Fedora system, a lot of font sizes magically increased. It seems you can fix this (per user) by clicking ‘System’, ‘Preferences’, ‘Appearance’. Click the ‘fonts’ tab, then the ‘details’ button, and change the resolution back to 96 dpi.
You can probably change this in some configuration file as well. If you know how, please let me know.

Log on to Fedora 14 with your active directory credentials
Submitted by johanv on di, 22/02/2011 - 11:27
You can use your active directory username and password to login to a PC running Fedora 14. This is how I did it:
Install pam_krb5 and samba-winbind:
yum install pam_krb5 samba-winbind
